As family child care professionals, we often hear the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.” While that statement is certainly true, I’d like to take it one step further. It also takes a village to build a successful family child care business. Many providers spend years trying to manage every challenge alone. They become the teacher, director, accountant, marketer, maintenance worker, counselor, and event planner—all while providing exceptional care for children. But here’s what I’ve learned after more than 26 years in early childhood education: The providers who experience the greatest success are those who intentionally build relationships within their communities. Community partnerships don’t just benefit your business—they create opportunities that enrich the lives of children and strengthen families.

Why Community Partnerships Matter

When we think about partnerships, we often focus on what we can receive. The better question is: “How can we work together to create something greater than either of us could accomplish alone?” Strong partnerships create opportunities to:

• Expand learning experiences
• Connect families to valuable resources
• Increase community awareness
• Strengthen your program’s reputation
• Build trust with families
• Access new opportunities and funding
• Create lasting relationships

Your program becomes more than a child care business—it becomes a trusted community resource.

Think Beyond the Classroom

Your classroom walls should never limit your children’s learning. Some of the most valuable educational experiences begin with community connections. Imagine partnering with:

• 📚 Your Local Library Invite librarians to read stories, host library card drives, or introduce children to the joy of reading.
• 🚒 Fire and Police Departments Children love meeting community helpers. Schedule visits that teach safety while building positive relationships with first responders.

As providers, we don’t have to solve every problem. But we can become trusted connectors. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can say is: “I know someone who can help.”

Strong partnerships aren’t built by asking for favors. They’re built by creating mutual value. When reaching out to a potential partner, ask yourself:

• What do we both hope to accomplish?
• How does this partnership benefit children?
• How does it support families?
• What value can my program provide?
• How can we grow together?

Great partnerships are built on trust, communication, and shared purpose.

Start Small

Many providers believe they need dozens of partnerships. You don’t. Start with one. Maybe it’s:

• Your neighborhood library
• A local business
• A nearby elementary school
• A pediatric office
• A nonprofit organization
• Another family child care provider

One meaningful relationship often leads to another. Before long, you’ve built an entire network of support.

Your Community Is Watching

Families notice when you’re connected. When parents see your program collaborating with respected organizations, they see professionalism, leadership, and credibility. Your partnerships communicate something powerful: “This program is invested in our community.” That trust can strengthen enrollment, referrals, and your reputation.
